Mercurio Artist
Margaret Peterson
Born Seattle, Washington 1902. Took a B.A. and a Masters degree at the University of California.
In 1931 she studied in Paris. In the 30's she traveled and did research on Native cultures in Mexico, Central America and also British Columbia. She taught at the University of California for 22 years but resigned her post rather than sign a politically-motivated "Oath of Allegiance."
On moving to Victoria from Cowichan Bay in 1956, Ms. Peterson occupied the studio once owned by Emily Carr.
Her art has been exhibited throughout North America in many public and private galleries and corporations. Peterson developed a national reputation as one of the most vital of the West Coast painters. Her work was instrumental in the forming of Canada's west coast modern art movement in the 1950's.
Died Victoria 1997
