Lionel Thomas
RCA, BCSA, CGP, FCA
Born in Toronto, Ontario 1915, Thomas studied at the John Russell School of Final Art, Toronto (1933-1965); Ontario College of Art, Toronto (1936-1937); under Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts (1947); under Mark Rothko at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco (1949-1950).
Working in oil, gouache, charcoal, enamel and foil on metal, he is best known for his abstract mosaic murals of landscape, city views, and still life. He designed much of his work in collaboration with his wife, Patricia. Some of his public architectural sculpture works are located at St. Mark's College, University of British Columbia, Vancouver; the former Vancouver Public Library; the former Edmonton City Hall, Alberta; and the Royal British Columbia Museum, Victoria. He taught at the Vancouver School of Art (1944-1950), and at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver (1950-80).
He was a member of the Royal Astronomical Society. He exhibited with the RCA in 1960 and 1970, and the MMFA in 1949, 1951 and 1952. His work is in the Collections of the AGO, NGC and VAG.
