Ina Uhthoff

Born Kirn, Scotland 1889. Ina grew up Glasgow and obtained a diploma from the Glasgow School of Art. In 1913 she visited the Kootenay BC area, where she met and later married Edward Joseph Uhthoff. In the mid-20s, she left her husband and moved to Victoria., where she established the Victoria School of Art.

Uhthoff joined Emily Carr in sponsoring a course to be given by Seattle painter Mark Tobey in 1929. In 1945, she took on the responsibility of running The Little Centre, a small public gallery, which became The Arts Centre of Greater Victoria a year later (now the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria). Ina Uhthoff was an accomplished painter and draughtsman, and perhaps the foremost early teacher of art in Victoria.
