Herbert Siebner
Born Stettin, Germany 1925 . He studied fine arts there 1935-37 and 1941-43. Drafted in 1943, Siebner was soon captured by the Russians. After the war he resumed his art studies at the Berlin Academy (1946-49).
In 1954 he immigrated to Victoria, where he became a key figure in a burgeoning artistic scene.
About 1960, the artists around Siebner formed the Point Group, a predecessor of the Limners Group, which Siebner co-founded in 1971 after the arrival of Maxwell Bates. Among the next generation of artists who came to learn from him were Ann Kipling, Michael Morris and Nita Forrest.
Siebner taught at the UBC Extension Department, Vancouver; the U of W, Seattle; and at UVic. He had numerous one man shows and group exhibitions throughout Germany, France, the United States and Canada. His art is found in numerous permanent collections around the world.
